Blog down? Make a three file blog!

Greywulf’s Lair was down for a couple of days (boo!) but thankfully it’s back up and working again (yay!). Did I mope about, cry like a little girl and scream at the screen in frustration? No!

Well ok, just a little bit. Admit it. You would too.

I also used that downtime to put together a quick proof-of-concept I’ve been mulling over for a while – the three file blog. This is nothing more than a background image, a style sheet and an index.html page served and auto-updated using the magic of Dropbox. Add a free domain name, use Twitter for comments, and you have one rather nifty ultra-minimal blog setup with not a MySQL database or web template in sight. As it’s a static site there’s no need to worry about Evil Blog Spammers too.

Want to know more? Check it out at http://greywulf.co.cc/ for more details and a quick howto.

I’m going to keep it up and possibly update it occasionally, but as a proof-of-concept I’m happy its done the job. I’d certainly build another one if I wanted a quick zero-hassle site with a limited shelf-life.

Here’s hoping Greywulf’s Lair stays up so I don’t need it :)

  1. and if you put the style information inline, you’d have a two file blog! i should not dare to ask you to consider dropping the background, though.

    1. Yep. Use CSS3’s awesome drawing capabilities and you could lose the background too, making it a one file blog.

But where’s the fun in that? :D
