Character du Jour: Sky

“Perspective. That’s what it’s given me.”. The hero known only as Sky leaned forward into the camera, “Sometimes I just stay there, twenty thousand feet up on a clear day, watching. You can see everything from up there, and it all looks so….. peaceful. If I spot something wrong from that distance – an explosion or a battle maybe – then it stands out. Something’s wrong. That’s when I fly in and fix it. So that I can see peace again.”

Sky is a hero with no memories, nor a desire to find any. Named for the first word he spoke when asked, Sky’s natural element is the air. He is, most likely, the greatest flying superhero ever (in our campaign, at least) with a top speed of at least 10,000mph. That’s around Mach 14, meaning he could fly from London to New York in 20 minutes without breaking sweat. When hugging the ground Sky reins things in to a top speed of about 100mph. He possesses an incredible agility; in combat he can fly a tight pattern hitting everyone in a 20′ radius in a single round, should he so choose. At Sky’s flight speed, being hit by him is like taking a missile in the stomach.

It’s no surprise that Sky’s feet rarely touch the ground. He’s befriended Tamra Meadows, a local TV reporter who has taken to leaving her skylight open day or night. Sky has learned much from her about how to carry out an investigation and often borrows her computer to follow up leads; he’s also made a number of useful contacts with law enforcement agencies along the way. With her encouragement he learned how to pilot a plane so he can appreciate what normal folks have to do to fly. That’s been put to good use several times when he’s been involved aiding stricken aircraft.

Sky is a brooder and thinker. Were he not such a loner, he’d be a capable team tactician thanks to his ability to literally get above the action. Perhaps, in time, he’ll open up.

Dirty little secret: Some believe that Sky is not human, but an Air Elemental given human form. That explains his affinity and lack of need to eat, drink or breath; whether that is true or pure speculation is anyone’s guess.

Notes: The best heroes have just one power or special ability, and everything stems from that in a logical pattern. Sky is one of those characters that’s pure simple concept, and from that comes his personality and what makes him tick. Compare Cyclops, Storm or Hulk with Doctor Strange say, or Superman. Superman would be a MUCH better character if his range of powers here pulled back, a lot. I mean, when you’re super-strong and can fly, do you really need x-ray vision, cold breath and laser eyes?
