Character du Jour: Day, Michael Day

“Who do you think you are? Bloody James Bond or somethin’?!”

The smuggler’s voice echoed across the barren dockyard. From the crate on which he stood, the cries of his human cargo a barely discernible muffled counterpoint to his rough guttural tones. The laser-sight from Michael’s pistol found it’s mark and one shot rang out. The smuggler’s head snapped and he arced backward off the crate, his already lifeless body hitting the water below.

“Not yet,” Michael muttered. “But I will be.”

Meet Michael Day, fastest climbing British Agent in the service. As Agent 104, he’s already been flagged as potential 00 material due to his uncompromising nature and complete dedication to the cause. He’s a single-minded career spy, having been hand-selected for the service from the British Army due to his tendency to re-interpret orders and act as a lone operator. While that’s potentially disastrous in the military, it’s very much a positive trait in the spying game.

Michael has so far carried out missions in Serbia, Germany and at home in Britain, single handedly breaking a line of human traffickers that spanned half the globe – with none of the trademark gadgets that are reserved for 00 status. This brought him a step closer to his ambitions, and he’s now as likely to be found wearing a tuxedo at diplomatic luncheons as he is in his well-worn all-black fatigues.

Dirty little secret: Michael is gay, and tried hard to keep it a secret from his superiors, who he thinks will consider it a black mark against him. They, of course, already know (and, frankly, don’t care). They also know that he doesn’t know that they know. Such is the nature of spies.

Notes: Mutants & Masterminds can do superspies too! The Agents of Freedom supplements give you everything you need to know about playing in the world of James Bond, Jack Bauer and all the rest, though as with most M&M supplements there’s very few new rules, ‘cos they’re not needed. The Core Book is that good. Instead, we’re treated to new archetypes, lots of lovely spy equipment and weaponry, a thorough discussion of the genre and complete write-ups of several organisations on both sides of the fence. Terrific stuff, indeed.
