That red in the back of the ship being shot at, is that an explosion, engine glow, a nevula or something else?

I’d say he’s already been hit and is venting plasma fluid. Yeah, he’s in a bad way.
The Mongoose Traveller system is pretty good. I especially like the character connections during character gen, it provides great background and gives the players a sense of history together and connectivity as well as suggesting adventure hooks.
