AreYouLivingInAFascistCountry: Tell me what you think.

If you live in the US you are, according to Naomi Wolf, and in this article from the Guardian she puts forward a pretty convincing argument too. Heck, I was convinced already, but that’s beside the point.

She defines the ten marks of fascism as:

1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy
2. Create a gulag
3. Develop a thug caste
4. Set up an internal surveillance system
5. Harass citizens’ groups
6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release
7. Target key individuals
8. Control the press
9. Dissent equals treason
10. Suspend the rule of law

The article details how America under George Bush has hit the mark on every point; I think she’s on shaky ground with one or two, but even scoring 8 out of 10 is nothing to be proud of. This ain’t a popularity contest.

Now, I know the flip side of the coin, that it’s in some way acceptable to give up liberties for the sake of security, but it’s not something I subscribe to. Exactly the same debate goes on here in the UK too, and this is the country with the most CCTV cameras per person than any other nation. That’s not good, at all. Does it make us safer? Nope. Not one iota. In fact, recent police statistics show that the number of CCTV camera does absolutely nothing to improve conviction rates, or reduce the amount of crime. Crazy, huh?

I could rant, but instead, go read the article with an open mind.

Tell me what you think.
