Well, I just read a book that collected travel memories of foreigners that visited Germany in the years before the war. If you ask me, honoring him as a man of the year would have been impossible with decent research.

The book I’m talking about is called Reisen ins Reich 1933 bis 1945, collected by Oliver Lubrich.

An English author appearing in this collection is Martha Dodd with extracts of her book My Years in Germany. I just found a blog post talking about her book, and it mentions how she absolutely detested Frederick Birchall of the New York Times, describing him as one who doesn’t speak the language and paints a very rosy picture of Germany. Notice the blog author’s conclusion: “Seventy years later the Times prepared the way for the invasion of Iraq with false stories of WMDs.”
