Technically, he was dead.
Around his waist snaked a thick band of plastic mesh. It was heavy, bulky from the circuitry, vials and tubes that wrapped around and inside. This was his PLS, the Portable Life Support that fooled his organs into believing there was a reason not to let decay take them. His heart beat to an artificial rhythm set by sensors on his chest, arms and legs. Every ounce of fluid that flowed through his body – his corpse – was regulated, measured and controlled with decimal point accuracy.
