Goodbye 2005, Hello 2006

What could be said about 2005 that hasn’t been said already? It’s been a great year for movies and books, a difficult year for the internet, a god awful year for DRM (yay!) and Sony, and a terrible year if you happen to live in a Middle Eastern country with lots of oil.

It’s been a year of increasing proof of Bush and Blair’s lack of morality, balanced by total apathy from anyone with the ability to actually remove them from office. It’s been a year where blogging has become recognised as a media force to be reckoned with, yet where the Internet as a whole has become more controlled and monitored.

I hope against hope that 2006 sees a swing away from the current mood of government-sponsored paranoia, control and fear. If it doesn’t, I guarantee there’ll be more terrorist attacks. Fear breeds terror. Terror breeds terrorism. Take away the fear by sowing openness and optimism, and the terror goes away. Simplistic, I know, but that’s it in a nutshell. “The best way to disarm a suicide bomber is with an open hand”.

It won’t happen while Dictator Bush is still on his throne, that’s for sure.

So, I hope that 2006 sees a new President in the Whitehouse, a new openness and, above all a very Happy New Year to you all!
