All that’s required for evil to succeed is for good men to accept the bullcrap politicians throw at them

From The Independent:

Britain is to become the first country in the world where the movements of all vehicles on the roads are recorded. A new national surveillance system will hold the records for at least two years.

Neither the UK or the US are lands of the free. We are increasingly being watched, monitored and controlled in ways that are socially and morally unacceptable. We no longer live in a country where civil liberties are the norm; in the UK we are monitored by the largest number of CCTV cameras in any country. Our internet is monitored, our emails are either being checked, or doubtlessly will be in the very near future. Our movements will soon be tracked.

I am a free man. I’ve done nothing wrong. I am not a terrorist and have no interests whatsoever in blowing up London. I want to live a life safe in the knowledge that I am free. Yet I’m not. I, like the rest of the UK population, are being watched constantly by the government, shops, the police, local governments and anyone who feels like watching. Given that I’m a photographer, it’s pretty ironic that if I try to take a picture in a public place, people look at me like I’m some kind of paedophile. They’ll all have been caught on camera hundreds of times that day already.

This isn’t paranoia on my part. We ARE being watched! I do not find it in any way acceptable. CCTV didn’t stop the Twin Towers from being hit. They didn’t stop London being bombed. They won’t stop another terrorist attack. What they did do was feed saturation news coverage after the events in London so the media could splash detailed maps on every paper of exactly where the bombers went and how they got there. That didn’t save one single life though. CCTV provides an illusion of security, nothing more.

Monitoring my car journeys takes away much more from me than it gives.

Osama Bin Laden is free. I am not.
